The Einstein Telescope project

It is the large research infrastructure to host the future gravitational wave detector to be built in Europe, a project with global scientific and technological impact, and Italy is a candidate to host it in Sardinia in the area of the disused Sos Enattos mine.

The science of the ET

General relativity and gravitational waves

Detecting the infinitesimal vibrations of spacetime.

Multimessenger astronomy

Studying the most extreme astrophysical events with different cosmic messengers.

At the frontiers of the universe

Opening new doors to the knowledge of a universe yet to be discovered.

Sos Enattos, the ideal site

Low seismic noise, limited presence of groundwater, rock masses that are ideal for safely building the underground spaces for the ET laboratory, large rural areas with very low population density and, therefore, limited anthropogenic and industrial activity.
All this makes the area around Sos Enattos, between the municipalities of Bitti, Lula and Onanì, the ‘silent’ environment that the ET needs to operate.

The ET is one of us!

From spacetime to gravitational waves, from black holes to dark matter, from the big bang to the fate of our universe: the ET, its science and technologies are the protagonists of many initiatives for citizens, for schools, for young researchers, in Sardinia and in Italy. Exhibitions, interactive multimedia exhibits, shows, seminars, lectures, public meetings, collaborative projects and cultural events.
