Palais Metternich, home to the Embassy of Italy in Vienna, hosted a prestigious scientific diplomacy event dedicated to the topic of gravitational waves and the European Einstein Telescope project, a future research infrastructure for observing the universe. The event, organized as a side initiative of the International School of Astroparticle Physics (ISAPP2025), featured the participation of Marco Pallavicini, Vice President of the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), who presented the scientific and strategic value of the Einstein Telescope and the potential joint role of Italy and Austria in the project’s development.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Giovanni Pugliese emphasized how major European scientific infrastructures represent not only excellence in research, but also key instruments of multilateral diplomacy. Through cooperation between countries, they strengthen international dialogue, promote the sharing of knowledge, and help build a more united and innovative Europe.
The event was organized in collaboration with the Austrian Academy of Sciences (the organizing body of ISAPP2025) and with the valuable support of the Association for Austria–Italy Scientific Exchanges (ASSAI), founded a year ago with the goal of promoting bilateral scientific collaboration. The initiative involved numerous young researchers from around the world attending ISAPP2025 in Vienna, as well as representatives from the Austrian Ministry of Research, academia, industry, and the diplomatic community.
