The astronomy festival organized in Sardinia by the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), in collaboration with the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), the Gal Sole Grano Terra, and the Union of Municipalities of Gerrei, is back again this year. Now in its third edition, the event kicked off on May 17 and involves eight municipalities: San Basilio, Sant’Andrea Frius, Silius, Villasalto, San Nicolò Gerrei, Escalaplano, Armungia, and Ballao. The program includes around sixty activities such as public lectures, educational workshops, exhibitions, creative installations, board games, telescope observations, and astrotrekking. To conclude four weekends dedicated to dialogue and encounters between the public and astrophysics researchers, a public lecture will be held on Saturday, June 7 at 6:30 PM at the DoSA Center in Ballao (South Sardinia). The lecture will focus on the Sardinia Radio Telescope, located in San Basilio, and the Einstein Telescope (ET) project. Speakers will include Federica Govoni, director of the INAF Cagliari Astronomical Observatory, and Alessandro Cardini, director of the INFN Cagliari section.
Studying the universe from the heart of Sardinia
Thanks to its geological features and low population density, Sardinia is an ideal location for major research infrastructures dedicated to exploring the universe. The Sardinia Radio Telescope, a one-of-a-kind instrument in Europe, observes the universe through radio waves, while the international ET project aims to build a new underground observatory in the Barbagia region for gravitational wave research.
